Over half of America’s population says they read over 10 books every year.
Of course, with all these exciting reading choices available to us, it can be easy to get so bogged down that it’s tough to decide what to read next.
Or, thanks to longer hours and harder days at the office, sometimes you just don’t have the time or the energy to pick out your next book.
If you’re looking to broaden the types of books you read, want to discover new authors, or just want to check out the latest gadget, Google Play Books through the Google Play Store is for you.
In this post, we’re telling you everything you need to know about how Google Play Books is ready to become your personal online librarian!
Google Play Books: The Basics
So, what exactly is Google Play Books?
Think of it as the Netflix of reading. They have over 5 million books listed and available for you to read. We know that you can’t always make it to the library or bookstore, so Google brings the library to you.
You’ll be able to take a look at the covers of books in full color, making this a great option for those who love to window shop for their next read. You’ll also be able to read a free sample of the book before you purchase it, just like you would in a bookstore.
You’ll get blurbs from other authors alongside reviews from readers just like you. These reader reviews give up to 5 stars to books, along with a longer text review. The page numbers, language, and even genre are listed.
You’ll even have the chance to see similar titles recommended underneath the book you’re currently browsing, meaning that you’ll always be able to find something to read!
Google Play Books: The Next Steps
Before we start telling you about how the awesome “Discover” feature can help to introduce you to new titles, we want to tell you a bit more about the other features Google’s online bookstore has.
First of all, finding those bestsellers is easier than ever. They’re featured right alongside new releases at the top of the store’s homepage.
To further entice you to read, Google even offers you a free preview!
We also love that there’s a special section for textbooks. If you’re a college student who can’t stand the strain of carrying multiple heavy textbooks to and from class every day, this feature can be a real lifesaver.
You’re even able to create your own Wishlist, see your past activity on the e-bookstore, and of course, send some gift cards to your friends and family members who love to read!
If you’re trying to find books for your children and want to make sure that the content of what they’re reading is appropriate and consistent with their reading level, you’ll love the “Parent Guide” feature.
This guide offers parental controls, guards against accidental purchases (for those toddlers that love to “play” on mom’s smartphone) and more.
Understanding The Discover Feature
Now that you know about the basic features of Google Play Books, let’s move on to discussing everyone’s favorite new feature: The Discover Tool!
Based on books you’ve bought in the past, or simply those you’ve indicated an interest in, Google can recommend new and exciting titles to you.
If the book isn’t to your liking, you can easily mark it as “not interested” and Google will adjust its tailor-made recommendation algorithm accordingly.
You can also mark the books that you already have in your offline collection, so Google can make even more accurate recommendations to you in the future.
You can head over to the “tell us what you like” section to select your favorite genre, authors, and more.
Don’t worry though – you won’t be forced to deal with any annoying pop-up ads while you’re reading. While you’ll likely see ads in the Google Play store itself, you won’t see any while you’re reading a book you’ve already purchased.
You’ll also have access to several sorted lists of books. These can be things like “Best Books Under $10,” “Your Must-Read List,” and “From Page To Screen.” So, in addition to checking out the titles that Google has recommended, you can also take a look at what others are reading.
What Will The Future Hold?
Of course, it wouldn’t be Google without a hint of their future plans to grow their e-bookstore. Eventually, Google says that it plans to include “Google Play Editorial.”
This feature will give you access to even more awesome literary content. Think things like author interviews, book clubs, essays, and feedback and thoughts from book critics.
What’s not to love about that? We can’t wait to see what they come up with next.
